Investing in Innovation (i3)

The eMINTS National Center at the University of Missouri and New Franklin (MO) R-I School District will examine the efficacy of eMINTS professional development programs on the achievement of high-need rural Missouri middle school students through a Random Control Trial. The RCT will occur in 60 school districts that qualify for the project based on the geographic and socio-economic status of their populations. School districts will be randomly assigned to one of three study groups for the project. Districts will receive intensive eMINTS PD (250 hours) and classroom technology (interactive whiteboard, student computers and peripherals).

Learning Point Associates, an affiliate of the American Institutes for Research, is the external evaluator for the project.

The project expects to serve 10,500 students and 240 teachers over its five-year period. The project features intensive PD, in-classroom coaching and technology-rich classrooms.

Project objectives and outcomes include

  • Assessing and increasing 7th and 8th grade students’ mathematics and English Language Arts performance by their exposure to eMINTS teaching styles and technology
  • Assessing and improving 7th and 8th grade students’ 21st century skills and academic orientation by their exposure to eMINTS teaching styles and technology
  • Understanding eMINTS PD impacts on teachers’ practice

"One of higher education’s most important goals is to help more students to succeed in college and attain their degrees. eMINTS prepares students for college-level work through an inquiry-based, student-centered approach to instruction. It builds on what students already know and expands their knowledge by asking them to apply it to real world situations. This is a tried-and-true way to use technology to improve college readiness and pave the way to degree attainment."

I have seen few concepts, ideas or programs introduced into education that have had the same type of positive impact on student learning as the eMINTS and inquiry-based instruction. I can’t imagine teaching any other way now that I have seen the possibilities eMINTS offers. “Students are not learning to use technology, but using technology to learn.”
