List guidelines

More than 2,000 educators (eMINTS teachers, eMINTS staff, and library media specialists in eMINTS schools) in several states and countries are part of the eMINTS discussion lists. These lists are tools for supporting eMINTS educators in their daily work with students, in supporting one another as we learn to use the power of technology to achieve higher performance levels for our students and ourselves. The lists have succeeded primarily because of the tone set by the list founders and long-time members. The prevailing attitude has been that everyone's experience is respected and everyone's experience in integrating technology into inquiry-based teaching is different. Please keep these principles in mind when posting to the lists.

Please take a few moments to read these guidelines. They are presented in the interest of keeping the lists viable and valuable tools for supporting eMINTS educators.

Participation is a privilege

These guidelines apply to all eMINTS discussion lists.

Participation on eMINTS discussion lists is a privilege. The lists are open discussion lists. They are configured so anyone who is a member can post a message to the entire group. With a moderated list, submissions must go through an approval process before they are distributed to the list. Any eMINTS list may be converted to a moderated list at the request of the eMINTS Director in the event that it becomes necessary to control postings to the list.

The following are not appropriate for eMINTS lists at any time:

  1. Spam (unsolicited e-mails that are trying to sell any service or product - like junk mail)
  2. Forwarded mail, especially chain letters
  3. Classified ads
  4. Promotion of commercial ventures
  5. Copyrighted material without approval
  6. Encoded documents
  7. Appeals for money

The messages on eMINTS lists do not necessarily represent the views of the eMINTS program, the University of Missouri, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) or other affiliated partners. Exceptions to this rule are messages sent by the Director of the eMINTS National Center or Weekly Update messages sent to eMINTS lists from the eMINTS National Center office.

eMINTS discussion lists guidelines

  • Please use common sense when posting. Be aware that you always have two options: responding through the list or to a member personally. The content of your message should determine which option you choose.
  • Be sure your posting is related to the purposes of the list. If you want to talk about other issues, do it on a person-to-person basis.
  • List members who also offer products and services or represent others who do so should refrain from using the list to advertise or solicit business. This activity is a conflict of interest and repeated violations may result in removal from the list.
  • Before posting calls to participate in surveys or other personal course-related activities to eMINTS lists, please send a brief summary of the survey and its purpose to emints-info@emints.org to secure permission.
  • Follow the list guidelines at all times. If you're not sure whether your post will violate the guidelines, ask the eMINTS Executive Director (beglaum@emints.org) before you send it.
  • If you are new to the list, it may be a good idea to "lurk" and learn what's acceptable before posting to the list.
  • Please keep posts to the list brief. If your post doesn't add value, don't send it. (Example: Do not send a "thanks" or "congratulations" message through the list. Send something like that directly to the person you're thanking or congratulating after the first announcement has been made on the list.)
  • Note that most eMINTS lists are configured NOT to accept attachments and may limit the length of individual posts to avoid unnecessarily filling up participants’ inboxes. Share links to information you have posted online to avoid “bounced” messages or deleted attachments and allow interested readers to follow up on their own.
  • Give your message a meaningful and accurate subject line to help readers scan for topics that interest them.
  • Remember to be courteous to other list members. If you disagree with them, fine; just don't resort to personal insults.
  • Please identify yourself properly. Provide a signature block that gives your name, position, grade level (if applicable), school and district, and your return e-mail address. That way people will know who you are and what your perspective is. List participants will easily be able to communicate directly with you off the list.
  • To unsubscribe from a list, go to the list information page and follow the directions to unsubscribe yourself automatically. Do not send unsubscribe requests to the list.
  • It is not necessary for you to forward virus warnings and the like to the discussion lists. eMINTS works closely with a strong security department and is always on the lookout for this type of information. There are several "technical" lists that provide accurate virus information to districts.
  • Please realize that thousands of people may eventually see your messages since they are archived and available for future readers. These readers may include individuals you know or someone you may employ or seek employment from in the future. Information blindly or impulsively posted may come back to haunt you.

Enforcement of discussion list policies and guidelines

To facilitate respectful discussion, essential netiquette policies will be enforced in the following manner, at the sole discretion of the eMINTS Executive Director:

  1. First you will receive a courtesy warning and possibly be asked to refrain from posting to the list for a week. If you post nonetheless, you will be permanently removed from the list.
  2. If, for any reason, you post a public complaint about the courtesy warning, however veiled, you will be permanently removed from the list.
  3. If asked to refrain from posting for a week and you comply, you may simply begin posting to the list again. However if the unacceptable behavior is repeated, you will be permanently excluded from participation in the list without further warning.
