BBC: Africa Lives
This site has a lot of information about Africa today. You can watch a slideshow, listen to African radio, or watch exclusive video clips. You can read the latest news, test your knowledge with an online quiz, or find recipes from Africa to try.

National Geographic: Africa's Struggle With AIDS
This lesson plan for grades 6-8 is designed to help students understand the enormity of the impact that AIDS has had on the population of Africa. Students can do research to compare the impact of AIDS on Africa as compared to the rest of the world.

National Geographic: AIDS in Africa
This lesson plan for grades 9-12 explores the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the population of Africa. Students can do research to gather data about AIDS in Africa as compared to the United States.

National Geographic: The Shape of Africa
This article by Jared Diamond examines the role that geography and environment have played in shaping African history. There are related links to further reading and a bibliography. NOTE: Reading level is for older students.

Women in Africa: Tradition and Change
This lesson for grades 9-12 explores the lives of women in Sub-Saharan Africa. Students can research and examine the role of women in traditional life, and learn about the literature created by women in postcolonial Africa.

This is an article about the impact of AIDS on the lives of women in southern Africa. There is a lot of factual information and statistics from the World Health Organization. NOTE: Reading level is for older students.

These sites show and tell about the history of adinkra cloths, an art form from the Asante people of Ghana and the Gyaman people of Cote' d'lvoire. Includes sites about the Ashanti tribe that also wears this type of clothing.

eThemes Resource: Imperialism and Colonialism in Africa
These sites contain information on colonial Africa. There are maps, photographs, and other primary source documents, as well as essays and interviews with contemporary authors and experts. Students can explore the historical background for literary works dealing with this setting, such as "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. Included are eThemes resources on South Africa, Rwanda, the African Continent, and the slave trade.

These sites are about the Republic of Ghana, located in western Africa. Read about the customs, government, and history. See images of the Kente clothe and learn about the Ashanti people. There are links to eThemes Resources on Africa and adinkra cloths.

eThemes Resource: Middle Ages: A Non-European Perspective
These sites contain information on the societies and cultures that existed outside of Europe during the time period known as the Middle Ages. Students can learn about African Kingdoms such as Ghana and Mali, the Asian Empires of Mongolia and Angkor, the Dynasties of Imperial China, and more. There are timelines, maps, articles, and pictures. Included are eTheme resources for additional information on China and the contemporary societies of North America.
