Alex Haley wrote a story about his ancestors, find out the facts and write a story about your ancestors. There are different templates for students to create their own family tree. This site has a wealth of information about immigrants arriving in the U.S. The free registration allows visitors to access passenger records.

Ellis Island: Through America's Gateway
Click on the thumbnail photographs to listen to the audio recordings of the immigrants. These audio files require RealPlayer. The recordings are scattered throughout the site.

Revealing Family Ancestry: The Civil War
Read the actual letters of this Civil War soldier, the ancestor of the Slagg family. This text may be too advanced for younger students, but there is good background information for teachers.

Alex Haley
Read this biography of Alex Haley, author of "Roots." This fictional book traced Haley's ancestors back to Africa.

The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation
Kunta Kinte is the distant ancestor of Alex Haley, author of "Roots." This site is dedicated to Kunta Kinte, African and then slave. Here are some fact sheets for teachers in PDF format.
