What is a family? In this unit, students can learn about many different types of families and how families provide for our basic needs.

A Family Portrait
Children can use their creativity in this art activity. They can look at family portraits that other artists have painted, think about what "family" means to them, and then paint a picture of their own families. NOTE: This site has links to external sites.

Children can make an award ribbon for a special member of their family.
Houghton Mifflin: Family Celebration
In this activity, children can discuss and illustrate the special days they celebrate with their families such as birthdays, graduations, or weddings. Children can draw a picture of his or her family celebrating and then share their pictures with each other.
