Resource Links:
| ZOOM: Kitchen Chemistry
This virtual kitchen lets you conduct online experiments to see if different liquids have acid or base reactions.
Chem4Kids
This site provides a basic overview of chemistry principles such as states, matter, biochemistry, and other concepts. NOTE: The activities are now only available by subscription.
Kitchen Chemistry
This site has several activities that show chemical reactions in cooking. Includes cabbage as a pH indicator, candy chromatography, and wintergreen LifeSavers triboluminescence.
Kitchen Chemistry
This site has a few short science experiments related to food and cooking. The experiments include gluep and ooblek.
Countertop Chemistry
Scroll down for experiments involving chemical changes (dancing spaghetti), physical changes (Ziploc bag chemistry), properties of gases (floating candles) and colloids (ooblek, gluep and clear slime polymer). NOTE: The text is advanced, but these experiments can be adapted for elementary students.
Kitchen Chemistry
This lesson plan has students determine if substances are acids or bases. Includes a discussion of ph levels.
Science of Cooking
Click on the food icons, such as eggs, pickles, etc., for a variety of activities about food and science.
Science of Cooking: Webcasts
View videos that discuss different scientific concepts in cooking.
Real Crystal Snowflake
Follow the instructions to create snowflakes using Borax. The site also contains a suggestion for using the same method with sugar to create edible rock candy crystals.
ThinkQuest: Chemistry for Kids
This student-created site offers an introduction to basic principles in chemistry such as solids, liquids and gases. The site also includes several easy experiments such as a balloon blower and moving drops.
Periodic Table
This is an interactive periodic table with links to descriptions of elements, a history of the table, and Mendeleev's original table of elements.
eThemes Resource: Chemistry: Atoms and Elements
These sites have information about atoms, atom structure, different models of atoms, elements, and the periodic table. There are also some online quizzes and a hands-on activity.
eThemes Resource: Matter: Properties
Find out how properties of matter describe its various states. Discover the states of matter that exist on our planet and in the universe. Includes experiments with different states of matter and observing the changes as well as animated movies, lesson plans, worksheets, and online quizzes. Several sites have lesson plans for teachers. There is a link to an eThemes on gases, liquids, and solids.
eThemes Resource: Scientific Method
These sites describe the general method used in scientific research. They also include the research process, the role and purpose of theory, and the history of the method. Includes a link to an eThemes Resource on science fair projects.
