Title: Matter: Gases, Liquids, and Solids
Description: These sites explain and define the three stages (or phases) of matter: gas, liquid, and solid. There is also information about a fourth phase called plasmas. Includes animations of particles, videos, illustrations, and activity ideas. There are link to eThemes resources on the properties of matter and mass and weight.
Grade Level: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Resource Links: Chem4Kids: Four Stages of Matter
Read descriptions of the properties and the relationships of gases, liquids, solids, and plasmas. The site is mostly text with some illustrations. NOTE: The site includes ads and a link to Google searching.

Why Files: What Are the States of Matter?
Read a short description on each state of matter. Click on the "More" link at the bottom for more fun facts.

Matter's Phases
This site includes a description of each state of matter and pictures of the atomic structures. NOTE: This site has a link leads to external websites.

Tech Topics: Matter
This site includes a description of the states of matter. Use the "Site Map" link to navigate.

National Geographic: Blue Goo
This site provides the steps and ingredients for making your own "blue goo," a substance that has properties of both liquids and solids. NOTE: The site includes ads.

Scholastic: Matter and Its Three Phases
Read this short explanation of the three stages of matter and includes an experiment for students to try. NOTE: This site includes ads.

What is Matter?
Specifically designed for fourth grade students, this site has links to several chapters on matter. Includes some pictures.

A Matter of State
Here is a science lesson and experiment on how temperature changes particle movement. The site gives an in-depth description of how to conduct the experiment as well as an assessment. NOTE: This site includes ads.

View the Action
Wait for the page to finish loading, then click on the different stages of matter to see an animation of what the particles look like.

States of Matter
This lesson plan for grades 1-3 has in-class activities that can help kids understand matter and the different states of matter. These activities also introduce kids to the concept of molecules and molecular behavior in different states of matter.

The Three States of Matter
This activity is for younger students. It includes a recipe for no-bake cookies where kids can identify and count how many different states of matter are used in making the cookies.

Solids, Liquids, and Gases
These activities are designed to show kids about the different states of matter and how matter can change the different states.

EdHelper: States of Matter
This is a crossword puzzle for older kids to test their knowledge of states of matter. Includes answers.

BrainPOP: States of Mattter
Watch the movie about the phases of matter, then try the quiz. NOTE: Site available by subscription only.

BBC: Science: Materials- Gases, Liquids, and Solids
Test your knowledge by to see if you can classify the correct category of solids, liquids, or gases. Includes a revision and a quiz. NOTE: This site has a link to a discussion forum.

BBC: Changing State
Learn about changing state of matter through an interactive experiment. Includes a revision and a quiz. Note: This site has a link to a discussion forum.

SuccessLink: Changes That Matter
This lesson plan is designed for upper elementary students to learn about the concept of chemical interaction through an experiment.

SuccessLink: Dry-Ice Lab/Demonstration
In this lesson plan, students do an experiment with dry ice and observe its different stages.

eThemes Resource: Matter: Properties
Find out how properties of matter describe its various states. Discover the states of matter that exist on our planet and in the universe. Includes experiments with different states of matter and observing the changes as well as animated movies, lesson plans, worksheets, and online quizzes.
