Description: These sites introduce the country of Italy. There is information on Italy's history, culture, art, traditions, cuisine, cars, and more. You can listen to a recording of the National Anthem, take a virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel, view an interactive map, or read about the history of pizza. There are several videos that show how to speak basic Italian. Also included is information about what it's like to be a kid in Italy.

National Geographic Map Machine: Italy
This site gives a brief history of Italy along with a picture of the flag and quick facts. There are links to a printable outline map or customizable dynamic maps of the country. NOTE: The site contains a banner ad.

ThinkQuest: Let's Roam Italy
Click on the map to read about the major cities of Italy. There are also links on Italian history, culture, and the Vatican.

ThinkQuest: Friendly Italian
This page provides the Italian words for the days of the week, numbers, and helpful phrases, including a pronunciation guide.

ThinkQuest: A Kid's LIfe in Italy
Read Brody's account of what it's like to be a kid in Italy. He talks about his home town of Sicily, his favorite foods and his favorite sports. There are also photos of Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and The Colosseum.

Explore the links on the left-hand side of the page for virtual tours of some of Italy's most famous monuments. See the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Rome, Brunelleschi's Dome in Florence, or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Most of the attractions have interactive panoramic views. Read a brief description of an Italian Christmas with a reference to the legend of La Befana.

PBS: The Shroud of Turin
Read an article about this famous relic, housed in Turin, Italy. There is an interactive picture of the shroud and an interview with a shroud expert. NOTE: The reading level is for older students.

PBS: Fall of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
This site has a link to a panoramic view of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Click on "The Galileo Games" for a mini-experiment based on the tower.

PBS: Sinking City of Venice
This is a website that investigates the battle to keep the world's most unusual city from sinking into the Adriatic Sea. You can explore an interactive satellite image of Venice, watch a video about the proposed barriers designed to hold back the sea, or view an animation that explains what causes the threatening tides.

Ancient Rome
This site offers information about the history of Rome. Click on the various topics to find out about Rome in the past. NOTE: The site includes banner and pop-up ads.

Sistine Chapel Virtual Tour
This site has lots of information about the art of the Sistine Chapel, including biographies of the artists and many detailed pictures to explore. There is a clickable map of the ceiling frescoes by Michaelangelo. You can also send an electronic postcard of many of the images. NOTE: Reading level is for older students.

Italy for Kids
This site has a large number of resources covering many aspects of Italy and Italian culture. Learn about Italian food, Italy's flag, fun things to do in Italy and more. The site also contains a quiz about Italy complete with answers

This site has a large selection of images from various regions of Italy. See images of famous historical landmarks from antiquity and today.

These websites are about the Renaissance in Europe. Find out about the artwork, inventions, science, and people of the time period. Includes information about the Renaissance in Italy, France, and the Netherlands. Three are videos, games, activities, quizzes, and more. Includes a link to an eThemes Resource on Shakespeare.
